1. What is URL shortening service?

• URL shortening services use redirection technology to automatically convert URLs.
• They replace and shorten the original long URLs with shorter ones, making them easier to remember, record, and share. This also facilitates document exchanges and other related applications. 
• Our center has currently completed the application for a dedicated domain (nchu.cc) and uses this domain to provide URL shortening services.

3. Usage methods and application examples

This application example is to teach everyone how to convert long URL(http://transformers.nchu.edu.tw/PsnWeb/index.html)into shorter URL(http://nchu.cc/5Yi!W)

For Example：

The following image is an example of an official document. The URL underlined in red, before shortening (long URL) is：

http://transformers.nchu.edu.tw/PsnWeb/index.html

Step 1. Input the long URL

First, go to the "URL shortening" service webpage, and enter the long URL（http://transformers.nchu.edu.tw/PsnWeb/index.html) to be converted in the "URL" field

Step 2. Select the redirection period.

In the "Validity Period" field, select the duration for redirection. The length of the validity period is the time during which the system can redirect for you.

For example: if you select a validity period of 6 months when applying for redirection, it means that within six months from the day you applied for redirection, the system will redirect any short URLs you generate back to their original long URL pages.

Step 3. Click the button

Click the button. The system will convert the long URL into a short URL for you.

ex. http:// nchu.cc/5Yi!W  This is the short URL generated by the system (case-sensitive).

Step 4. Copy the shorten URL and Their Applications

You can either directly click on the link or use the "Click to copy to clipboard" button to copy it. Example Application: Replace the newly generated short URL onto the original document, thereby simplifying the existing long URL. In the future, when recipients receive the document, they only need to type "http://nchu.cc/5Yi!W", and the system will automatically redirect them to the original "http://transformers.nchu.edu.tw/PsnWeb/index.html".

4. Limitation

Currently, our school's short URL service is only available for internal domain or IP addresses. If you input an external URL or IP, the system will be unable to provide redirection services.

5. Other Related Applications

Short URLs have many other applications! Such as,

• Placing the short URL for event registration on posters.
• Printing the short URL of personal websites on business cards.
• Printing the URL of departmental student associations on T-shirts.
